I would do the following as well to keep your code layout neater:

  1. move your CSS stylesheet into its own 'css' folder.
  2. in your link tag
<link rel ="stylesheet" ... 

use

href="css/styles.css"

to specify your path correctly.

  1. Also set the type="text/css". Your link tag should then read
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/styles.css">
  1. Change the doctype at the top to
<!DOCTYPE html>

Keeping things neat and orderly from the outset will save you a massive headache in the long run :)
