How do I get good at illustrating?

I don't consider myself an artist at all; I can't really draw well, but I am a UI designer and I need to be able to do beautiful illustrations and icons. How would I get good at doing these?

Start collecting examples of what you like and want to add to your designs. Look around the web and in books for illustrations and icons that you want to use for inspiration. Start doodling! Hand sketch ideas on whatever paper you have laying around. It doesn't matter if it is good or not- it is just for practice. Do it for a week and you will get better, a month will be better still. If you draw something you really like then snap a pic and drag it into Sketch or Gimp and try to make a vector version. Icon design vids by Michael Flarup are a great source of inspiration for me and he has really good tips. Drawing well takes practice so go pick up a pencil and do it. Cheers!
