How do I create beautiful websites?

I watch tutorials on web design but whenever it comes to execution on photoshop, I can't create anything professional. I don't particularly know where to begin, I get lost in the maze of color palettes, choosing typography, and web layout. My question is how does someone create a unique website? What are the steps you use for determining how a site will look and feel , also do you use inspiration sites before you start designing? I can code well but design just confuses me and I would really like to learn.

Before designing anything go online and search for inspiration.

What I mean by this is you may know elements in your website that you want (sliders, navigations, contact forms) Then you may NOT know what you want.

In the case that you know what you want such as a slider, I would go online and search for tons of slider designs and pick pieces from them that you like and make your own out of that inspiration.

In the case that you do not know what you want I would search sites by theme. Lets say your making a website for a lawyer and you don't know what would go good in a website like that. I would look at tons of lawyer websites and then grab inspiration as well as ideas from them.

Example would be lets say you saw a really cool contact form with some unique features like a section for placing your phone number and you receiving a call back from the office. You can take that idea and observe the element that they used for this feature and yet again go search for that element and see different styles and what not.

In the end of the day designing is an art and you will never make a professional pixel perfect website if you have never designed before. It takes a lot of practice and work but these are just some of my routines and tips for you.

I have the hunch that "Brand identity" courses in Treehouse and further research om the subject might take you to where you want.
