How do I add an if statement?

String firstExample = "hello"; if (firstExample.equals ("hello")) { console.printf("first is equal to second\n"); System.exit(0); } String secondExample = "hello";

I have to add an if statement then print out "first is equal to second". Not sure what I am doing wrong...

// I have imported a java.io.Console for you, it is named console. 
String firstExample = "hello";
if (firstExample.equalssecondExample("hello")){
  console.printf("first is equal to second.\n");
  System.exit(0);
}
String secondExample = "hello";
String thirdExample = "HELLO";

Add the if statement after the variables are declared.

Sorry - I was out of the house earlier, hence the quick response.

You have used secondExample in your code before it has been defined. At the point your code is testing whether firstExample is equal to secondExample, the second variable doesn't yet exist.

So, the code should look like:

String firstExample = "hello";
String secondExample = "hello";
String thirdExample = "HELLO";

if (firstExample.equals(secondExample)){
  console.printf("first is equal to second.\n");
}

This way, all the variables are declared and initialised before they are used.

I hope that makes sense.

Hi Michael,

Your conditional test needs to look like:

if (firstExample.equals(secondExample)){
  console.printf("first is equal to second");
}
