how do i add a margin of 2.5% then set the text and background color to my choosing?

when i try i get a message sayin that the previous task is not valid

After looking everything over it appears that you just forgot to add a semicolon before you set the margin.

gallery li {

float: left; width: 45% <-------There margin: 2.5%; background-color: #f5f5f5; color: #bdc3c7; }

That's why the code challenge was saying that the previous task is not valid, because the previous task asked you to set the width.

The gallery has a # before it though

Also your width 45% doesn't have a ; after it
