How did you get the icon to be in front of the a element when there wasnt a new html element in front of it?

How did the background image not become the background of the whole link when we targeted that link, instead it went to the right of the link?

I'm struggling a little bit with the context of your question without any code to go on. But there are background properties you can use on image backgrounds to control how an elements' background image appears.

Use the likes of background-repeat, background-position, and background-size to customise the appearance of a background image.
