Had a few weeks off and lost all my motivation to code. Now feel like I'm forgetting everything. Need help please.

Had some relationship issues over the past couple of weeks. I started off learning HTML & CSS on Youtube around April. I then joined Treehouse around the start of May.

Anyway things are on the mend and I feel a lot better, but I need some advice about how to get back into coding. I loved doing it and now I can't bring myself to do it and make excuses up. I feel like I've forgotten a lot of stuff as well although I have taken notes on pretty much everything I'v learned so far, so I can always refer to them or google.

I feel like I have progressed well and I really wanna become a front end developer someday and don't wanna throw away my dream,

Thanks

My g don't worry these things happen but you just have to stay true to yourself and work hard for your dream. I started off on team treehouse and after the knowledge i've gained, i'm now a software developer so keep working hard and some day your dream will come true.

As well as this, don't worry about remembering every selector and all of that nonesense. Focus on creating stuff, i.e you know html and css but have you made any websites? they' don't have to be for people but you could just make websites to demonstrate your skill such as making yourself a portfolio that showcase all your skills or making a website for cafes.

That's if you're into front end, if you're into back end you could make a billing system and things like that.

What I'm trying to get at here is that the tutorial is the first step, after that you can finally code the projects that you want! :D

have fun

I'm glad you said that because I find some fo the selectors hard . I'v made a couple little website projects in the past to see if I can put what i've learned into practice. They're nothing special but I have 100% made a lot of progress. Thank you for your reply bro! :)

I am so glad I cam across this post. I am in the same boat. I have taken a few months off due to burn out and now I find it hard to get back in to things. I also suffer from depression and it is hard for me to get motivated in general. I feel a little better knowing that others have the same experience and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and to get back on track.

Sometimes I also have the problem that I do not feel like it anymore. But then I look online what other people make and on pintrest to webdesigns. And I immediately feel like it again. The thought that you can make that with a lot of practice is motivation enough for me.

Hi Joshua,

I totally agree with Conor! That is something that helps me as well. Also, I don't think you lost all of your knowledge, it really is still there. But it might be a good thing to repeat some of the stuff you already did, because repetition is one of the most powerful things in learning. I often learn a lot from tutorials of real life projects, because then a lot of topics are covered instead of only one.

Good luck! The only thing you have to do is start! :)

I've had this problem for a while myself. I've had a ton of life inconveniences that made me drop my web developer studies. Hell, I worked three jobs for a year before having a mental breakdown and deciding that it was time to quit one of the jobs so I can focus more on code. For motivation, I watch/listen to Chris Sean on YouTube. Also, just make sure you take things one day at a time. Don't worry about becoming a developer NOW, just focus on yourself, start building some projects and go to meetups.

Hi Richard. Working three jobs that must be really tiring, I salute you for that! I do actually watch Chris Sean a lot, I still watch vloggers and stuff that’s how I know i haven’t lost interest fully. I hope your ok bro. Thanks for th advice. I keep looking at the end goal instead of small steps, so thank you. :)

I gotta tell you, after dropping one of the jobs, I'm feeling so much better. Mentally, I am back in the right mindset. Now, my biggest challenge is to keep focused on the end goal for sure. The only thing that I also need to start doing is building small projects.

Glad to hear that Richard. I'm slowly getting back into things and preparing myself mentally. I'm not gonna do any Treehouse stuff for now, just gonna do some projects first. It's good to know we have a good community here and people can help or relate to other peoples situations. Keep at it bro!

Hey there,

Thank you for your post. I have the same issue, the difference is that I had a few MONTHS off... and today is the first day I get back to it. Also, my laptop has been stolen and I did NOT make a back-up of all of my files... including my project files e.g. portfolio website etc. It's really hard for me to get back on track, because I copied almost every step and adjusted those to my favour in my project but now they are all gone. Luckily I wrote down the instructions from the courses on paper, so I can get back to it step by step.

Still, I feel I have lot to do. For example I just forgot how to start with HTML. But anyway I just put in work and hope I get back into it.

Best regards, Boyke-Brett
