arr is just a parameter in the function for the any array that can be later passed into it (playlist in this case). And, yes, it would be helpful to have learned HTML before this (but not totally necessary if you are able to follow the discussion), but if you haven't, you can just start another course on it to get up to speed. You can do more than one course at a time, especially if they are on very different types of subject matter. The "normal" path in learning to make websites is: HTML, CSS, and then JavaScript. A good way to do this is through the Treehouse track Front End Web Development (https://teamtreehouse.com/tracks/front-end-web-development).
