Difference between Slices vs Make Exportable?

I don't quite understand the benefit of going through the extra step in making an object a slice (ex. coffee cup) then to just "Make Exportable"? When I hit Export, the result is the same. Can someone clarify for me.

Thanks!

A slice looks to be editable (for ex. size/position). You can choose to export group contents only so that background is transparent, or choose a different background color entirely. Export "slices" as is, but already with transparent background. If you want to edit before export, you could click the slice icon to the left of the + in the bottom of the inspector.
