i can't understand why this will not work

Hey there Alyssa,

A few things. The link tag needs to be closed with a "/". There is a "." before the rel tag and you don't need .main-pg{} in the link tab since you are linking to an external style sheet

<link href="styles.css" rel="stylesheet"/>

Within the stylesheet /**/ notes a CSS comment vs //.
