Create a child theme for a downloaded theme

I downloaded a theme called 'Hatch'. I want to make a child theme but can not seem to follow the instructions outlined. What is my 'finder'? is that my file manager on my computer or my local site directory in FileZilla?

I think I botched up my files by trying both :(

I can't get anything to work like the video. Do I need to uninstall everything and start over? I lost files in my local directory on FileZilla (the default themes) when I dragged the 'hatch' file to the right.

How do I start over?

Finder (OS X / Mac term) is similar to Windows Explorer. It's basically your file directory. Are you familiar with Wordpress, PHP, and other basic front-end languages? This might be a large step for a newcomer. Nevertheless, here's a link to get you started.

Thanks for your comment. I am not so familiar with the basic front-end language for the Mac. After the research link you provided, I realized the step I was missing was creating a style.css file. I did not know how to do this step, but I figured out what was needed and did it. The only problem I came across is the file on my PC is larger then the file I uploaded to my site. I am deficient 9 bytes. I haven't come across any other issues visually or structurally.

This is the site I created before Treehouse. I know I have a lot of things to learn; especially how to create a child theme!
