color for artboard

Following her instructions with illustrator. I created my artboards. When I have the artboard tool selected the background color for the artboad is grey. When I choose any other tool, the background color becomes white, which is very hard to work with. I don't know how this happened. Can someone help me with this?

The default color of the artboard is white when created. You can change the color of the artboards by going to "File" > "Document Setup". Here's a video of this being done in CS6: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcLrpl4LTNI
