Can one create a beautiful website by coding alone with the same quality as if it was done in Photoshop? Does a front-end developer need or will need to know Photoshop to create a template down the road?

12,119 PointsIn my opinion, the Photoshop is still the industry standard for creating website mockups, but sketch (www.sketchapp.com) is catching up. For a front-end Developer, you don't need to be an expert in the photoshop, maybe just to know how to take measurements and colours.

Photoshop is most often used to work with photographic images, which are almost never created using code. But a Front-End Developer is often given completed artwork by a Designer or Artist, so having such skills is not always necessary for a Developer. But depending on your organization, having a few overlapping skills with other roles might be useful.

6,282 PointsThank you so much for your feedback sir. As an aspiring developer is it still helpful to create a template in Photoshop to import into an editor of any kind? I look everyday to web design/developer portfolios and I know that the images were created in Illustrator and Photoshop but is it still possible to create such amazing looking websites without them? What is a great alternative to Photoshop for the sake of creating images?

231,007 PointsAs I said, Photoshop is mostly for manipulating images.
For creating new crisp non-photographic visual site elements a more typical tool would be Adobe Illustrator.
But if you're looking for a public-domain (read "free") alternative to Photoshop for image manipulation, you might consider Gimp.
