Clarification on "class"

When do I use "." instead of ":" and visa versa?

example: nav a.selected and nav a:hover

"." is for classes that are in the HTML code that you or someone else created. You can create as many as you like and name them what you want. ":" is for certain states that are determined by the browser or other UI, like ":hover" when the mouse pointer over the element. There are only a set number of them and have predetermined names. They're called psuedo-classes because they act much like HTML classes but aren't the same thing.
