Changing the color

When I open up stylescss it shows up blank....how do I change the color if I don't have a class or color to change?

index.html
<!doctype html>
<h1>
  <head>
    <link href="styles.css" rel="stylesheet">
  </head>
  <body>

    <p>Welcome to My Web Page!</p>

  </body>
</h1>
styles.css

They want you to change the h1 tag to purple and for you to write the code.

h1 {
  color: purple;
}

your HTML should also be fixed to

<!doctype html>
<html>
  <head>
    <link href="styles.css" rel="stylesheet">
  </head>
  <body>

    <h1>Welcome to My Web Page!</h1>

  </body>
</html>

Notice how I changed the h1 tags
