When you connect through the USB cable, you should get a notification on the samsung a5 asking for which connection type you want to use. Try selecting the Camera (PTP) option.

do you have USB-debugging activated?
You find it under developers options, activate it and the computer should start see your phone.

10,365 PointsTo select a USB connection protocol, open the Settings app, tap Storage, tap the menu button, and tap USB computer connection. Youβll also see the protocol your device is using as a notification when itβs connected to a computer via USB.
OR:
I am on Android 6. If I charge my phone I can see a notification for charging only ... so when I type on this notification I can choose between MTP/PTP and MIDI ... so you should go with PTP like Josh suggested
