Python Python Basics Functions and Looping Raise an Exception

Can you please raise a ValueError if the product_idea is less than 3 characters long? product_idea is a string.

I don't understand what does the "def" thing for

suggestinator.py 
def suggest(product_idea):
    return product_idea + "inator"
product_idea = input ("What's your idea?")
if product_idea < 3:
    raise ValueError("Need to be longer!")

The "def" starts a function definition. And you seem to have the right basic idea, here's a few hints for fixing it up:

  • anything that is part of the function must be indented more than the "def" line
  • the "return" ends the function, so anything you want done in the function must come before the "return"
  • the passed argument contains the string, so you won't need to "input" anything
  • you will want to test the length of the string, not the contents
