I am not sure how to finish this. where did the output come from and how does it function with this program?

You have to declare input and output first at the top so the code knows what they are.

then remove string from both outputs

using System;

namespace Treehouse.CodeChallenges { class Program { static void Main() { 

        string input, output;
        input = Console.ReadLine();

        if (input == "quit")
        {
            output = "Goodbye.";
        }
        else
        {
            output = "You entered " + input + ".";
        }
