You should use "#rainbow li" instead. When you use #rainbow, it only returns the ul element, and since you are looping through colors instead of the list of found elements, you get an undefined when you try to apply the second item from the color array.

Also, I would rewrite this to loop through the found elements rather than the constant list of colors, so that it doesn't run at all if it doesn't find the elements.
