Java Java Basics Perfecting the Prototype String Equality

Boonlean error

I was trying to create a program where if firstExample = secondExample the screen will say "first is equal to second". However when it comes to the code if (firstExample = secondExample) the preview points to the the equals sign in my code and says boonlean error.

Equality.java
String firstExample = "hello";
String secondExample = "hello";
String thirdExample = "HELLO";
if (firstThing = secondThing) {
  console.printf("first is equal to second");
}

In a lot of programming languages(Java being one of them) = is for assignment, while == is for comparing if two things are equal.

Hi Pedram,

When comparing the value of strings in Java, use .equals(). For example,

if (firstThing.equals(secondThing)) {
  console.printf("first is equal to second");
}

Using == in string comparisons will check if they are the same object, not if they contain the same value.
