Am I wrong here?

I think it is correct

GoKart.java 
class GoKart {
  private String color = "red";
    public getColor() {
      return color;
    }
}

You are missing a return type on the getter, otherwise it is fine:

class GoKart {
  private String color = "red";

  public String getColor() {
    return color;
  }
}

// Returns the String variable 'color', which is equivalent to "red"

'color' is a String type variable, thus the method must be set to return that type of data.

In extension, if 'color' were of type Integer, the method would have to return 'int':

class GoKart {
  private int color = 8;

  public int getColor() {
    return color;
  }
}

// Returns the Integer color, which would be 8 in this case
