You're really close! All you need now is to add your new parameter to the function definition and make it optional:

<?php
function get_people($filter = null) {

Also, that error handling was a nice touch, but not needed for the challenge. For best results with the challenges, do only what they ask for since sometimes it can confuse the validation.
