Ummm ... The doctest format is off at multiple places
- should not leave blank line between test case & expected output
- needs to have a space between >>> and average = (1, 2)

average = (1, 2)is not a function call. - lastly, average function takes a
listas argument, your code gives 2 numbers as arguments instead.

return sum(num_list) / len(num_list)
That should fix the problem.
