Hopefully you have a better
understanding of sexuality,
0:00
and now we all have a similar language so
0:03
we can discuss why this is important in
our world, as well as the tech industry.
0:06
Whenever we're talking about identity,
0:11
we want someone to be able to show
up at work as their authentic self.
0:13
This means that they don't need to
change how they look, act, talk,
0:18
or dress and can be themselves while still
having access to things like promotions,
0:23
or job security, like anyone else should.
0:29
We need to become comfortable with
discussing the disparities for
0:32
folks who don't identify as straight.
0:36
Each group of the LGBTQ
community faces oppression.
0:39
Although some aspects of being
LGBTQ can remain hidden,
0:44
we don't want folks to feel as
if they can't be themselves.
0:47
This can impact day to
day interactions and
0:51
how much someone shares about their life.
0:54
As you learn about someone,
0:57
you wanna hold back from making
assumptions about how they identify.
0:59
For example, if someone shares with you
that they're in a relationship with
1:03
a woman and identify as a man,
you might think they are straight.
1:08
However, maybe they are bisexual or queer.
1:12
Someone might present themselves
as a certain sexuality, but
1:15
you want to let them share how
they identify if they want to.
1:19
A value at Treehouse is to
take care of your family.
1:23
For us to embody this, we recognize
that all families are different.
1:28
We intentionally reflect on how we
can show our pride as well as offer
1:32
equitable resources and
support to these communities.
1:37
Everyone should want their friends,
family and
1:41
colleagues to feel comfortable sharing
about their life if they want to.
1:44
I have had family members share with me
that they are part of the LGBTQ community.
1:47
When they have, I recognize their
courage to share with me but
1:53
also acknowledge I supported them,
regardless of who they were attracted to.
1:57
I showed my excitement to meet
their partner or set them up.
2:02
Here's an interesting
disparity to consider.
2:06
Someone who identifies as
LGBTQ usually comes out and
2:10
tells people close to
them their sexuality.
2:14
This showcases how someone has to
announce they're LGBTQ, whereas someone
2:17
who is straight doesn't say to their
parents, "Hey Dad, I'm straight."
2:22
I bet that sounds kind of silly to you.
2:27
So why does an LGBTQ individual need
to come out, something to think about.
2:30
Safety and belonging are issues for
the LGBTQ community.
2:37
The Human Rights Campaign
reports that 26% of LGBT youth
2:42
say their biggest problems are not
feeling accepted by their family,
2:47
trouble at school, or bullying and
a fear to be out or open.
2:53
Whereas 22% of non LGBT
youth say their biggest
2:58
problems are trouble with class,
exams, and grades.
3:03
Think about how this impacts someone.
3:09
This could cause someone to never
feel comfortable being who they are.
3:11
Someone might feel as if they need
to conform to fit the norm and
3:16
try to come off as straight to fit in.
3:20
If this is happening in youth,
this can impact someone in adulthood.
3:22
They may not want to work at a company
that doesn't show their support for
3:27
the LGBTQ community through trainings,
zero tolerance policies, ERGs etc.
3:32
Although there has been progress,
there's still hate and oppression.
3:38
It was only in 2015 when same
sex marriage became legal.
3:43
Now there are people who are actively
trying to reverse this and
3:47
other protections for the LGBTQ community.
3:52
We need to work together to be
active allies to the LGBTQ community
3:55
in our spaces, this shows up in many ways,
some we are able to discuss today.
4:01
I encourage you to use this as
a stepping stone to learn more.
